Old Man Luedecke Returns with 'Tender Is the Night,' Rolls Out Canadian Dates

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Sep 5, 2012

Just before spring hit, East Coast folkie Old Man Luedecke confided that he had just laid down a disc's worth of tunes that had been recorded in Nashville, with the artist planning to drop the collection sometime in the fall. The Chester, NS banjo plucker's plans have now come to fruition, as the new album, titled Tender Is the Night, will arrive October 2 through True North.

A press release outlines Old Man Luedecke's upcoming LP as a boundary-pushing affair that finds the tunesmith joined on record by a crack team of Nashville studio musicians. The album, his fifth overall, was tracked over the course of four days at Tennessee studio the Butcher Shoppe with producer Tim O'Brien, who also lent his multi-instrumentalist talents to the recording session. Other players on the album include bassist Mike Bub and drummer Kenny Malone.

Tender Is the Night apparently keeps up Old Man Luedecke's dedication to "playful, coy, and soul-warming" narratives, and supposedly finds him refining his metaphors, as well as his musical approach.

Amongst the album's many tales, "Tortoise and the Hare" apparently tackles the famous fable's "push for success," while "A&W Song" finds a cabbie and his intoxicated passenger heading through a late-night drive-thru.

"I am running like everyone else. Laughing just to keep from crying. I am always trying to find a way to express," Luedecke said in a statemet. "I am a prisoner for my appreciation for language; language that moves me is language that is unusual. I feel like it's an important thing I can contribute to songwriting."

If you're angling to hear a new tune before the due date, Old Man Luedecke is offering up the rustic bluegrass rambler "Jonah & the Whale" in a sneak peek stream, which you can check out down below.
