"Harmless Lover's Discourse"

BY Cam LindsayPublished Jan 20, 2009

Often bands relocate to get heard, but I can't really say why Odawas have gone from Bloomington, IN to Elletsville, IN, then to Indianapolis, IN, on to Chicago, IL and then set up camp in Berkeley, CA - seeing as their label is Bloomington's Jagjaguwar. It appears that the travelling has done them some good, though, judging by this first sample of their forthcoming full-length, The Blue Depths (due February 17). It begins like one of those enormous ballads the likes of Christopher Cross and Starship paid off their houses in full with in the '80s, but "Harmless Lover's Discourse" soon breaks free from the soft rock mould when Tapscott's weary voice appears in a blanket of reverb, it transcends any hint of fromage and blossoms into a full-on ballad for contemporary daydreamers who like less distorted wah and more piano in their shoegaze.
