German progressive death metallers Obscura offer up Diluvium, the last of their four-album concept series that began with 2009's Cosmogenesis. Meaning a "great oceanic flood," Diluvium maintains the quartet's technicality, flawless musicianship and complex structures, as well as their aggressive, groove-laden riffage.
But Obscura have always been ones to push the boundaries of death metal throughout their 16-year career and this album follows suit. Diluvium is diverse and engaging throughout, starting with the pummelling "Clandestine Stars," which features a whirlwind of intricate, speedy guitar work and thunderous blast beats. "Emergent Evolution" switches things up with slower, atmospheric tones and delicate melodies, while the combination of harsh growls and clean vocals adds to the dynamic vibe of the track.
The black metal-tinged "Mortification of the Vulgar Sun" is exceptionally dark, while "Ethereal Skies" offers up a more symphonic approach. "The Conjuration" brings back the more ferocious side of Obscura, featuring riffs that are particularly headbang-worthy, while the melodies on "An Epilogue to Infinity" are captivatingly eerie. Obscura have mastered the ability to continually evolve their sound, yet still maintain their distinct identity, and Diluvium is a prime example.
