Gatineau-based musician Nick Schofield has just shared new single "On Air" from his forthcoming LP Ambient Ensemble, which will arrive on February 9 via Halifax label Backward Music.
Schofield's latest song is airy and luxurious, with a floating, dreamlike quality. The musician took inspiration from composer Joanna Brouk to create the gentle, ambient track. "When making 'On Air,' I imagined the music accompanying a painter in her studio, the windows open and the song flowing in and swirling around the artwork," Schofield shared in a press statement.
He says the song went through many different versions and drafts before it took its final form. "Over time, I realized the potency of the piece is for the piano to be the emotional guide instead of the melodies, giving it a direct narrative. I prefer the feelings that arise from the music to form the 'story of the song,'" said Schofield.
The same dreamy, free-floating themes are present throughout the entirety of Ambient Ensemble, which sees the musician collaborating with a chamber ensemble featuring clarinet, double bass, violin and more.
