New Millipede Species Named After Taylor Swift

Nannaria swiftae was discovered in Tennessee

Taylor Swift has done a lot in her nearly two-decade-long tenure as a pop superstar, but one can only conquer so much in the human realm. So naturally, she's now being honoured by the insect world.

As reported by phys.org, a team of scientists from Virginia Tech recently released a paper officially announcing the newly confirmed, long-assumed collection of a whopping 16 new species of millipede living in the Appalachian mountains, and one of them is named after none other than Taylor Swift.

The study's lead author, Derek Hennen, decided to name one of the species Nannaria swiftae after Swift, and another Nannaria marianae after his wife. That's some cute shit! Hennen said about his decision to honour Swift with her own millipede species: "Her music helped me get through the highs and lows of graduate school, so naming a new millipede species after her is my way of saying thanks."

Swift is the latest in a long line of stars to have creepy crawlies named after them — including Lou Reed and Idris Elba — which I can only assume is more of an honour than any phoney award. There's also Asteroid 1980 RE1, the asteroid dubbed Sophiexeon after the late, great pop pioneer SOPHIE

Nannaria swiftae can be found in Tennessee, where Swift got her start as a country pop prodigy. See Hennen's tweets about the whole thing below.
