In Nerdcore Rising, a small documentary crew attempt to uncover the humble world of nerdcore hip-hop by tagging along on the first U.S. tour of website designer-turned-rapper MC Frontalot, who first coined the term as a way to describe his nerdy raps. A decent rapper with an encyclopaedia vocabulary, an occasional tongue-twister flow and a bad back, Frontalot's onstage nerd shtick looks like fun. Interspersed amongst his tour antics and stage show is talking head footage of nerdcore fans and artists giving their views on Frontalot, the music and their own geek status. It's all informative but it's the massive turnout to his Penny Arcade show that legitimizes Frontalot and nerdcore hip-hop, along with the positive input from respected artists like "Weird" Al Yankovic, Jello Biafra, J-Live and Prince Paul (eat that, hip-hop purists!), of course. It's just a shame that with all the possibilities — video of a full set, some live songs or even tour footage put to music — that the only bonus feature is a trailer.
