Nadja

Guilted by the Sun

BY Max DeneauPublished Aug 13, 2007

Within weeks of Alien8’s reissue of earlier effort Touched, Nadja offer yet another top-notch exploration of the more emotive side of drone/doom. Vocally, this four-track EP features a slightly creepier, hissed vocal style, which almost resembles ambient black metal. The low-end has delved even deeper into sub-bass frequencies, throttling the listener’s drawers and bookcases mercilessly. Although slightly more stripped-down than some of their other work, Guilted by the Sun displays subtlety even in its most rumbling, Neanderthal-ish moments, particularly in the mixing. "Guilted” shifts into an uncomfortable, repetitive, fast tempo at one point but otherwise there are no obtusely misplaced moments to be found. While not the greatest introduction, Guilted by the Sun is a necessary inclusion for fans of the group.
