There is a joy to the self-titled debut from Colorado three-piece Muscle Beach, a particularly gleeful kind of violence that makes listening to this record an unexpected delight. The lyrical content is unabashedly over the top and ridiculous; topics include swashbuckling pirates, sharks being awesome, alien invaders and even some absurd love stories. Every single choice on this record seems to be made with the guiding principle: What is the most fun?
Their post-hardcore is ridiculously catchy and also disarmingly weird, with lots of surprising moments within songs that are deeply, deliciously satisfying. Listening to Muscle Beach is a lot like being in a really great fistfight: explosive action, lots of circling out and fancy footwork, unexpected movement and blood all over the place. Then, after the violence, you and your opponent had such a great time you immediately fall into deep, respectful love with each other and go drink a hundred beers to your newfound friendship.
