Aesthetes have sought out nature and art to access the sublime for centuries, and MUTEK Montreal has partnered with hinter live to co-present their second season of programming at the interstices of live music and environmentalism — featuring the premiere of a new performance recorded by San Farafina (member of the internationally-acclaimed Moonshine Collective) live from Little Huckleberry Island.
San Farafina's performance premiere will welcome the public, as well as the artists and organizations involved in the series, to an online chat room, calling for donations to nonprofit One Tree Planted in real-time.
Following the devastation of fires in British Columbia's forests dating back to 2017, hinter live launched a reforestation campaign with One Tree Planted last year. The goal is to replant 8,000 trees by this summer, with each live session planting over 500 trees — and an additional tree planted per dollar donated.
"We are grateful for the support of hinter live, an organization passionate about making a positive impact for the environment throughout Canada," forest campaign manager Ashley Lamontagne said in a release. "The trees we are planting will create a lasting benefit for nature, biodiversity and habitat in British Columbia."
Filmed in Thousand Islands National Park, the unceded territory of the Onʌyote'a•ka (Oneida), Wendake-Nionwentsïo, Onundagaonoga and Mississauga Nations, previous virtual concerts in this season of the year-long performance series came from Ouri and Korea Town Acid. Last season saw Pierre Kwenders, Safia Nolin & Pomme, Joyia and El Extravagante playing beautifully shot sets filmed in the middle of nature.
The virtual event featuring San Farafina will take place at 8 p.m. ET on March 8, hosted on MUTEK's immersive and custom-made virtual platform — an online space showcasing performances, interactive art installations, conferences and more that allows MUTEK to highlight content from Quebec and Canadian talent on an international scale. The episode will be available for the general public to stream via hinter live's YouTube channel on March 22.
