Mitski Fans Accuse Mac DeMarco of Ripping Off 'Be the Cowboy' with 'Here Comes the Cowboy'

They both also released singles called "Nobody"

Mac DeMarco just announced plans for his next album, Here Comes the Cowboy, and he's already catching flak for the record's striking similarities to another recent release — Mitski's Be the Cowboy.

It's not just the album titles and imagery that have Mitski fans calling it a ripoff; DeMarco's lead single is called "Nobody," which was also the name of a single from Mitski's 2018 album.

According to DeMarco's rep [via Pitchfork], DeMarco never listened to Mitski's record and only learned of the similarities after confirming his own release.

Mitski seems to be taking it all in stride, tweeting: "I'm 100% sure Mac & I just went fishing in the same part of the collective unconscious!"

She went on to reveal her theory that their shared publicist kept quiet about the similar album and single titles because she was just trying to mutually benefit both artists.

That hasn't stopped her fans from defending her honour on Twitter, though. See some of their reactions below.
