Mirel Wagner

'When the Cellar Children See the Light of Day' (album stream)

Finnish folkie Mirel Wagner has joined Sub Pop's expanding global empire, and with her album When the Cellar Children See the Light of Day arriving on August 12, it's now available to stream ahead of time on Exclaim.ca.

Opener "1 2 3 4" is not to be confused with the similarly titled Feist tune, since it's a ghostly ballad centred on a cycling acoustic chord progression, droopy-eyed vocals and nothing else. This is typical of these 10 tracks, which are folksy and typically feature only minimal sonic decorations: there are some quiet orchestrations beneath "Ellipsis," some echoing backing vocals on "Oak Tree" and tinkling keys on closer "Goodnight."

It was recorded at Shark Reef Studios in Hailuoto, Finland, with electronic producer Vladislav Delay. He helped Wagner to flesh out her sound — although only barely.
