"Beatles or Stones" has long been the conundrum of rock 'n' roll — something of a personality test for whether a listener prefers the cerebral complexity of the Beatles or the raw swagger of the Rolling Stones. But if there's a perceived rivalry between the two groups, the members themselves don't feel it, since Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney are texting buddies, even if they're not really proper friends.
"John [Lennon] was a close friend of mine," Jagger said during an interview with Q with Tom Power. "And he was very acerbic and funny and witty and intelligent and everything. But I also knew Paul, who is a different kind of personality. I've always been friends with him. We don't see each other that much, but we do text each other. We sort of keep in touch. I've always got on well with him. Ronnie [Wood] and Paul also see each other quite a lot. So we have a sort of communication."
McCartney plays bass on "Bite My Head Off," a track from the Rolling Stones' upcoming album Hackney Diamonds. "We suggested he played on this sort of punk tune," Jagger said. "I didn't know how it was going to work out, but he really rocked it. And he loved doing it. He said, 'Ah, it's great playing with a band.'"
