Mew

And the Glass Handed Kites

BY Andrew SteenbergPublished Feb 1, 2006

Somewhere between A-Ha and Muse lie Mew and their front-man Jonas Bjerr’s impossible falsetto. On their second proper North American release, they’ve issued a seamless prog pop odyssey that takes you from the "Chinaberry Tree” to "The Zookeeper’s Boy.” As illustrated by those track titles this is unmistakably European and at (many) times the lyrics look like something off of Engrish.com (i.e. "Saviours of Jazz Ballet (Fear Me, December)”), but the tunes are so lovely, fluid and addictive that it only adds to the charm. With And the Glass Handed Kites, Mew have joined the Raveonettes in proving that Denmark has a legitimate post-Aqua-"Barbie-Girl” pop presence.
