Merchandise Announce Debut 4AD Album 'After the End,' Premiere New Video

BY Gregory AdamsPublished May 28, 2014

After dropping their epic "Begging for Your Life / In the City Light" 12-inch for 4AD earlier this year, Florida-based combo Merchandise have now given up the details on their full-length label debut. The band's After the End drops through the label August 26 in North America and a day earlier overseas.

A press release notes that the 10-song set was self-recorded over a six-month period by the band at a house they share in Tampa, FL, but the end results did get a bit of mixing assistance from Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Interpol, Grizzly Bear). While still apparently retaining the post-punk spirit heard on previous releases like 2013's Totale Nite EP, vocalist/guitarist Carson Cox asserts that the band rebuilt themselves from the ground up on this latest LP.

"Totale Nite was the end of the book. This is a whole new one. It's like we can start a new band with basically the same name," he had said in a statement. "We've already exploded our reality — now we're going to re-make ourselves as a pop band, but it'll still be a twisted reality."

Beneath the tracklisting, you'll find the first taste of the set, "Little Killer." The video starts off with a lengthy bit of white noise, but the sunglasses-sporting crew eventually kick into moody '80s-era pop melodies. You can pre-order the album on iTunes here, which gives you a free instant download of "Little Killer."

Merchandise also have several North American tour dates lined up, including Canadian stops in Toronto and Montreal. You'll also find all those concerts below.
