Since the passing of Alexisonfire, drummer Jordan Hastings has been putting the focus on a new punky project called Say Yes, and the fledgling trio have just announced they will be issuing their debut EP this summer through Dine Alone Records.
Made up of principal songwriter/drummer Hastings, former Saint Alvia member Adam Michael on guitar/vocals and Michael Zane on bass/vocals, the group's seven-song, self-titled set arrives August 19. While this will be their first commercial effort as Say Yes, a press release notes that some of the members have been working together off and on for years.
"Adam and I have been writing together for over 15 years," Hastings explained in a statement. "Even during Alexis's run, we'd still get together between tours and write music. We knew there was something special there, and over the last year or two, we've put a lot more into it."
After the band solidified their lineup in 2012, Say Yes began a year-long writing process that apparently yielded tracks blending the riff-rock style of early Queens of the Stone Age, the post-hardcore groove of Quicksand and the mid-'90s pop punk found on Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph. The songs were then taken to Burlington's B Town Sound Studios and recorded with Justin Koop (Billy Talent, Walk Off the Earth, Grade).
Lyrically, Michael added that the EP focuses on "matter-of-fact and real-life" topics ranging from everyday events to more political fare.
In addition to the upcoming EP, Say Yes have a handful of tour dates coming up around Ontario with the likes of the Mohrs, the Trews and the Sheepdogs. You'll find the concert details, as well as studio-set video for Say Yes's "Sunrise," down below.
