Just in time to celebrate its 127th birthday, beloved Toronto venue and historic site Massey Hall has announced its grand reopening this November. Newly revitalized, the venue is ready to open its signature red doors to music fans again this fall after a three-year closure for extensive renovations. And the grand reopening comes with a slew of scheduled performances.
Beginning this November and carrying on through late 2022, Massey Hall mainstays will make their triumphant returns and others will make their headlining debuts at the venue. Poetically, Gordon Lightfoot — the last artist to play prior to renovations in July 2018 — will be the first to usher in the new era of Massey, returning for three consecutive shows from November 25 to 27.
Lightfoot will then pass the torch to likes of Buffy Sainte-Marie, City and Colour, Broken Social Scene, Leif Vollebekk, the Glorious Sons, Sarah Harmer, Bruce Cockburn, Jann Arden, Serena Ryder, Donovan Woods, Tanya Tagaq, Mavis Staples and more.
Other confirmed performers include Andy Kim, Chilly Gonzales, the Tenors, Molly Johnson, Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin, Royal Wood, Choir! Choir! Choir!, Courtney Barnett, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Whitehorse, Alan Cumming & Ari Shapiro, Cowboy Junkies, Buddy Guy, Glass Tiger, Pink Martini, and Olafur Arnalds.
In a statement, Massey Hall president and CEO Jesse Kumagai said:
Today's announcement feels like a homecoming for many artists whose music helped shape the legacy of this incredible venue, ushering in a new era alongside those announcing their Massey Hall debuts. The weeks and months ahead will reveal more exciting news as additional concerts are added to the Massey Hall schedule and we unveil details of Allied Music Centre's new performance spaces.
