The Future Is Ours, If You Can Count

BY Sam SutherlandPublished Aug 1, 2006

Sure, surf music is cool, and reminds you how much Kids in the Hall ruled. But it also gets kind of boring after about five minutes of tremolo guitar and tom-heavy drum beats. So what rules about the Mag Seven’s The Future Is Ours, If You Can Count is that it has moments of purely fun surf music that are immediately followed by aggressive punk rock instrumentals that keep things from stagnating. The impressive list of performers on this record includes Descendents drummer Bill Stevenson and Gwar axe-master Zach Blair. Anchored by the exciting bass and organ work of Hagfish’s Doni Blair, the 11 instrumental surf punk tracks that compose this record are catchy, driving and, quite simply, fun to listen to.
