Mac DeMarco's Sneakers Fetching Thousands in eBay Charity Auction
Published Dec 29, 2014If you hadn't already been convinced that 2014 was a breakout year for Canadian "jizz-jazz" crooner Mac DeMarco, let it be known that a ratty old pair of the singer-songwriter's shoes are commanding, as of press time, upwards of $8,500 in a charity auction on eBay.
A signed pair of maroon-coloured Vans were put up for sale on Sunday (December 28), with the Salad Days singer explaining that all proceeds from the purchase will go towards New York City's Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, a "non-profit music and mentoring program that empowers girls 8-18 through music education, volunteerism, and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration."
"I'm selling an old pair of my shoes," he wrote for the eBay listing. "I've John Hancocked the left shoe. Will anyone buy an old stinky pair of shoes? I don't know. let's wait and see. I'll probably throw some other crap in the box before shipping it, I dunno what."
The Vans had apparently seen a lot of action throughout 2014, having graced countless stages around the globe between July and December. You'll find the full list of shows he wore the sneaks at down below, as well as a "smell test" video proving that the odour of the items is totally "fine." It should also be noted that DeMarco has a seller rating of 100 percent.
DeMarco added, "If you're one of those kids who tried to take them off my feet while I was crowd surfing at some point this year, nice try jackass. But hey, here's another opportunity for you to have them."
The eBay auction ends next Sunday (January 4). You can find out more over here.
As previously reported, DeMarco's hectic 2014 also included an appearance on The Eric Andre Show, collaborating with Tyler, the Creator, being detained by police for crowdsurfing at during a show of his at the University of California in Santa Barbara, and more.
Exclaim! also crowned Salad Days the No. 1 Pop & Rock album of the year.
UPDATE: The auction has now ended and the shoes sold for an impressive $21,100 U.S.
