Italian death metallers Logic of Denial are back with their second full-length, Atonement, following 2010's Necrogenesis. Featuring 11 tracks of intense, pulverizing death metal, à la Hate Eternal and '90s-era Morbid Angel, Atonement adheres to classic death metal style. Heavy, punishing riffs dominate the album right from the start with "Reek of Perpetual Infamy," which includes guitarist Alessandro D'Antone's fast, catchy rhythms, as well as an incendiary solo. Daniele Costa's drumming pummels throughout, particularly on "Behold the Throne of Torture," which displays crude blasts, and "Sepsis," which maintains steadily crushing beats, as the song switches time signatures and tempos. Vocalist Mattia Gatti showcases unwaveringly deep, ominous gutturals through each track, while bassist Marcello Tavernari maintains an absurdly heavy low-end. While Logic of Denial exhibit extremely traditional, Florida-esque death metal, they have managed to incorporate some innovative song structures and enough captivating melodies to keep Atonement from getting stale.
