Halifax's Hot Mondy have released their brand new album Best Laid Plans today, exploring "time, human nature, mental health, and the people the band have met along the way" across its 11 tracks.
Having previously previewed the record with singles "Be Mine," "I Know Now" and "Bloodlines" featuring Jah'Mila, the band have, at last, unleashed Best Laid Plans in its entirety.
"We can't imagine anyone is reading this, but if you are (hi mom), we'll try and avoid using words like 'groundbreaking,' 'original' or 'retro,'" the band's Matt Brannon said of the record. "It's weird because we have to tell people about our new music, but…it's music. Like, just go to Bandcamp and give er a free spin wha." And you can do just that today here at Exclaim!
Recorded at Sonic Temple in Halifax and produced by Michael Phillip Wojewoda, Best Laid Plans finds the band enlisting six different lead vocalists, each hand-selected for their ability to tell the story of their respective tracks the right way. Elsewhere on the album, you'll find strings, horns, sax, and a blend of genres from folk to rock to country.
"Writing, recording, and performing music in 2023 is as fun as it ever was, everything else is anal fissures," Brannon shared. "We are constantly bombarded with 'rules' and 'insights' to get 'playlisted.' This all sounded pretty awful, so we didn't do any of that. That's why you'll only find our music on Bandcamp and select retailers."
He added, "We want to think of the music fans and take them on a pretty cool ride. We can't offer a money-back guarantee as there's no money in music anymore, BUT, there are worse ways to throw away $25."
