Last year, the cardigan that Kurt Cobain had worn for Nirvana's iconic MTV Unplugged performance went to auction, and now a bigger prize from the evening will hit the block in the form of his acoustic guitar.
The 1959 Martin D-18E guitar that Cobain played for the 1993 taping will go up for auction in Beverley Hills next month through Julien's Auctions. The instrument, complete with case, is expected to fetch around $1 million USD.
"This important guitar has earned its rightful place in rock & roll history as the instrument played by one of rock's most influential musicians and icons in one of the greatest and most memorable live performances of all time," Darren Julien, president and CEO of the auction house, said in a statement.
Prior to today's announcement, Cobain's Unplugged guitar had been at the centre of a divorce between the late rocker's daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, and ex-husband Isaiah Silva.
In 2018, Silva was awarded the instrument in a property settlement as part of divorce proceedings, claiming it was gifted to him by Bean as a wedding present. TMZ reported that Bean decided to part with the guitar to avoid any further legal battles with Silva.
Cobain's instrument will join Prince's blue "cloud" guitar on the auction block as part of the "Music Icons" event at Julien's Auctions, set to take place June 19 and 20 in Beverly Hills and online.
Additional memorabilia will come from Madonna, Michael Jackson, Jim Morrison, the Rolling Stones, Queen, Whitney Houston, Johnny Cash and David Bowie, with further auction details here.
Last year, Nirvana's MTV Unplugged session was given a vinyl reissue.
