Everybody please welcome 102.7 the Pole to the stage! As of Tuesday (February 28), a new radio station is playing strip club classics for the good people of Kingston, ON.
By tuning in to 102.7 FM, Kingstonians can listen to "music for the grind" — an eclectic selection of pop, hip-hop, rock, R&B, new wave and metal inspired by the ambiance of your local peeler bar. Spinning these tracks are a selection of DJs, including hosts Desstiny and Chestiny, who host the "Tea-back or Tea-bag" morning show.
The current formatting of 102.7 comes after Jon Pole and Andrew Dickson acquired Border Broadcasting in December. The station used to be owned by Rogers Sports & Media's KiSS 102.7, and the Pole serves as a stunt to garner attention as the station transitions ownership.
Assisting with the transition is radio veteran Rob Mise, who says Border wanted to "create some drama" to make it abundantly clear that KiSS no longer occupies the 102.7 frequency. "We want to kind of recreate some of the drama that goes on [at strip clubs] …" Mise tells Exclaim! "Because it's so realistic, it's like a reality show. There's people that actually think that the radio station is inside the club."
Since the station was erected, Mise says the phones of Kingston strip joint Suits Nightclub have been blowing up. The owners of the club — two 45-year-old hockey moms — want to be involved with the station, and the Pole aims to have them on the air soon.
As of publication time, there's no timeline for when the station will switch from the stunt format to regular programming. Because of the amount of attention the Pole has garnered, it's possible that it could stay on the air into the summer.
While you won't need to bring bills to the Pole, we're going to take this opportunity to remind you to tip your service workers anyway.
Listen to 102.7 the Pole live here to hear selections from the likes of Ol' Dirty Bastard, Shaggy, Rihanna, Daft Punk, Elton John, Dr. Dre, Eve, Gwen Stefani, Nirvana, Usher and many more.
