All was revealed last night (May 23) when Kanye West premiered his new film Cruel Summer at the Cannes Film Festival. While speculation surrounded the short when it was announced that it would be part of Cannes' lineup last week, the debut confirmed that this was in fact the film West was working on in the Middle East last year. It was shot entirely in Qatar, and co-directed with Alexandre Moors.
According to MTV, Kid Cudi takes the lead in Cruel Summer as a "car thief who falls for a blind Arabian princess." As hinted earlier, the film was projected onto seven different screens that turned on and off depending on the scene, giving multiple viewpoints and angles to the affair.
"It related to a post-Steve Jobs, post-Windows era, where we're always on our BlackBerry in a ball game or at the movies," West explained of his approach while giving a speech at the festival. "I'm not the best director in the world, but I had an idea that I thought would be amazing to inspire people, like a dream of one day this being the way people watch movies."
The "7 Screen Experience" can be enjoyed at Cannes until tomorrow (May 25), it's unclear when the short will be shown elsewhere around the world. According to Ye, he needs to "go bring it to New York, to Qatar, and re-edit it" first.
