Montreal's Kaia Kater makes a triumphant return with new single "Parallels" — her first release since 2018's Polaris long-listed and JUNO Award-nominated LP Grenades.

The track sees the rising folk singer undergo a catharsis of sorts to create a space for reckoning and rebirth. "'Parallels' is about destruction," Kater said in a statement. "It's about ripping out harmful beliefs that have grown and taken root inside many of us like weeds."

She elaborated on how the tumultuous nature of recent years influenced the song:

I wanted to create a sense of sonic chaos — as if anything could happen — because mine and my friends' experiences in the last few years have been to show up and care for each other amidst the chaos of job loss, financial instability, mental health crises, environmental disasters and more. I would like "Parallels" to be a welcoming for whatever folks feel — be it sadness, rage or whatever else.

The track revels in pitch black emotions, with a dangerous beauty to the vocals, casting Kater as a siren luring us in. Her voice dips and cascades with delicious darkness over Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah's stunning trumpet playing.

Kater co-produced "Parallels" with Andrew Ryan and features Kevin Matthews on drums. The track is a promise of more exciting music to come from the Canadian talent.
