Joyia is a name to follow in the coming months; the Toronto-based singer-songwriter's Legends EP is aspirational in title and legit in terms of content.
Toronto-based duo HMLT — brothers Corey and Taylor Wong — have been stealthily building their cred both as artists and producers, and establish a R&B and jazz-minded vibe with electronic and hip-hop sensibilities for this EP effort.
Title track "Legends" is a playful number, weaving electric hip-hop moods, a bouncy flow and a confident demeanour. Running super lean at three tracks and 13 minutes, it's a quick musical sprint that rides Joyia's strong and breathy vocals to good effect: "Flavours" is a lounging slice of hazy modern R&B — "I got so many flavours…" — and "Adore You" is a straightforward slow burner on intense love and intent. Joyia is already known in underground circles and this latest effort serves to help build that musical cred.
