Sigur Rós already appealed to the cinephiles in their fanbase this fall via their new concert film Inni, but bandleader Jónsi will be kicking it with movie moguls a little while longer, as outlined by his upcoming soundtrack for Cameron Crowe's new flick We Bought a Zoo.
A press release explains that Jónsi's score, composed of new songs, musical interludes and a few re-imagined tunes from his back catalogue, will arrive December 13 via Columbia Records, ten days before the film's December 23 release date.
The collection was written and recorded throughout the summer and fall at Los Angeles's Village Studios and Jónsi's home studio in Iceland. Dangling just above the half-hour mark, the set features two brand new tunes, one of which ("Gathering Stories") was co-written with Crowe. The rest of the set is filled with nine "achingly beautiful" themes, reworked versions of songs from Jónsi's 2010 solo set Go, Sigur Rós's 2005 track "Hoppipolla" and more.
The Cameron Crowe connection comes from the director being impressed with Sigur Rós's 2007 film Heima. Apparently, he made the cast and crew of We Bought a Zoo, including Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson, watch the music documentary, and Crowe's film even features "a cinematic homage to a specific moment in Heima when gleeful crowds stream in a Sigur Rós show in the far North of Iceland or, in this case, the newly opened zoo."
In other Jónsi news, Inni is currently being screened across the globe, including a brief run at Vancouver's VanCity Theatre that starts this Friday (November 4). The CD/DVD package of the set comes out November 8 via XL.
