A two-CD set of re-recordings of his greatest songs, Classics finds Scottish folkie John Martyn tackling songs from his 70s and 80s heyday with a band that makes them sound uncomfortably stale. The players backing Martyn here are too middle of the road for this material, leaving the outcome at times sounding ready for your local lite-jazz station or at best, headed for MuchMoreMusic.
