Joel Plaskett Shares New Song in Tribute to Gord Downie

BY Calum SlingerlandPublished Jun 22, 2016

Following the news of Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie's brain cancer diagnosis last month, fans and artists alike have given Downie and company their best wishes. Feist payed tribute last month in recording a cover of the band's "Flamenco," and now Joel Plaskett has penned an original tribute song of his own.

Titled "Just Because (for Gord Downie)," Plaskett described the tune as a "poem turned song," taking the form of a seven-and-a-half-minute blues-rooted rocker. Following an a cappella intro, the song slowly moves through rocking verses, also featuring some fuzzed-out soloing and a tempo change in the bridge.

"Crank it for the man with love," Plaskett states. You can do so in the player below.
