One of the few debut performances at this year's MUTEK came from BC native Jesse Bru. It comes on the heels of his full-length debut on Audio Parallax and ahead of a forthcoming 12-inch release on the recently-founded Canadian imprint Heart To Heart. His laid-back productions have been creating a stir in the house music underground and it was clear why. The accessible soul-warming themes had the room on their feet. Tracks rooted in classic foundations felt fresh and reborn as crisp claps and fluttering keys capered over buckets of shuffling funk. The set included a tasteful homage to Marvin Gaye that in some circumstances could have fallen flat, but the bold move was executed with precision and class.
