Jenny Berkel will release her full-length debut for Pheromone Recordings next week, but before Pale Moon Kid officially lands, Exclaim! is giving you an exclusive listen to the new album in its entirety.
The 11-song offering follows last year's Cicada EP and hears Berkel honing her musical craft alongside Daniel Romano and her sister Kay. The new material was recorded in Welland, ON, but draws inspiration from a range of places Berkel has called home over the years.
"The songs on this album come from different homes across Canada," she explained in a previous statement. "The quiet of rural Ontario, the open prairies, the rush of Toronto, and a small apartment in Montreal's Parc Extension. My life and the stories surrounding me were constantly and quickly changing."
Beyond just the titular references to places like "St. Denis" and "Winnipeg" or the natural imagery of songs like "Wealth in the Country," "Blue Lit Air" and "Pale Moon," it's Berkel's collection of lived experiences that manifest themselves musically across the album. Arriving as a set of dark, orchestral folk ballads, the stories told through the tracks on Pale Moon Kid are moving, melancholic and totally mesmerizing.
You can hear the new songs come to life live at Berkel's upcoming shows, which are listed below. First, though, listen to the full record right now before it's officially released on April 15.
