Ontario-born, Montreal-based singer-songwriter and poet Jenny Berkel has detailed new EP The Quiet Between, and today is teasing its release by lifting first single, "Light It Slant," off the upcoming record.

To be released via Outside Music on October 7, the artist's latest follows her third LP These Are the Sounds Left from Leaving, which dropped in May. Created in the midst — and the resulting aftermath — of the pandemic, The Quiet Between is a five-song EP meant to emphasize the significance of one's local community.

Featuring interpretations of poems by writers Síle Englert, Sydney Hegele, Kevin Andrew Heslop, David Janzen and Ryanne Kap — all of whom were part of Berkel's artistic community and several sleepy winter days of recording in London, ON — the songs are meant to reflect a new quiet imposed by the pandemic, while also allowing the poetry of Berkel's collaborators to be at the forefront.

According to press materials, "Light It Slant" — based on Janzen's poem "High Level Bridge" — juxtaposes melancholy with an undercurrent of hope, investigating the nature of wisdom and the wisdom held within the quiet of nature.
