Last night (March 14), emo girl enthusiast Machine Gun Kelly revealed the album cover — and guest features list, which includes Lil Wayne, Bring Me the Horizon and Pete Davidson, because of course — for his forthcoming new album, which is now-titled Mainstream Sellout (after getting matching tattoos of the previous title with Travis Barker).
Fans and members of the press alike were quick to compare the album artwork, which features Mr. Megan Fox surrounded by smushed tomatoes, to that of Japanese Breakfast's excellent 2021 offering Jubilee. In the latter, Michelle Zauner appears withtomatoes persimmons dangling around her on strings and holds one up to cover her right eye.
Zauner retweeted Rolling Stone's article discussing the similarities between the two images, adding: "2022's feud of the year."
MGK chimed in: "so should we beef over tomatoes or ... should I thank them for introducing me to your album? Because I just listened and I really like it."
You heard him, fellas: weed personified was today years old when he found out about Jubilee, which made Exclaim!'s 50 Best Albums of 2021 (and pretty much everyone else's). A genuine congratulations to him on this exciting development.
Meanwhile, Zauner offered further comment on the similarities in an interview with Pitchfork.
"I don't actually think it looks anything like my album cover at all," she said, "but I think it's very funny that Rolling Stone put up an article about it just because there's a circular fruit in the foreground."
She added: "I mean his is people throwing tomatoes at him, and mine is persimmons peacefully hanging around me, so I think they're very different concepts."
