Though the hip ironists at The Daily Swarm bill it as "the first 6 of 40 million bands," it is worth celebrating the fact that Vancouver's Japandroids are one of those first six acts confirmed for the 2010 SXSW. In reality, the festival, running March 12 through 21 in Austin, TX, features a still-boggling 700-plus acts in 80 venues.
The Japandroids join five other non-U.S. acts in this first volley of confirmed bands to SXSW, including Spain's Giulia y los Tellarini, Mexico's Hong Kong Blood Opera, London's Archie Bronson Outfit and CHEW LiPS, and Australia's Temper Trap.
The Vancouver duo are wrapping up their touring for 2009 with western U.S. dates (alongside Floridians Surfer Blood) culminating with a hometown gig at the Biltmore Cafe on December 2. Then in February, they are off to Europe for a series of shows that will take them through Scandinavia, Germany, France, Holland and Belgium eventually shoring up for six gigs in the UK.
If SXSW wasn't enough of a career accelerator, how about being singled out by Blink-182's Mark Hoppus as a band to watch in his inaugural "Hopp on Pop" column for Spin.com?
