Jandek

Glasgow Sunday

BY Kevin HaineyPublished Sep 1, 2006

Sporting black slacks, black shirt, black hat, black guitar, Jandek walked out of the shadows and onto a Glasgow church’s stage to play his first ever unannounced gig, studiously accompanied by Richard Youngs on bass and Alexander Neilson on drums. Watching the man is entirely captivating, as he skulks about, seemingly so alone and haunted, moaning and strumming out of tune blues dirges for voice and electric guitar. Witnessing the man in the flesh after 28 years spent working in seclusion is both simultaneously demystifying and reaffirming — Jandek is real and no put-on. Of the three versions, the unedited "Camera 1” captures the event truest. (Corwood, www.forcedexposure.com)
