We haven't really heard from Los Angeles, by way of Toronto, artist Jahkoy lately. At least in the manner that we thought we would, based on the media buzz he was getting a few years back, via Soundcloud and his 2016 Foreign Water EP. 404 sees Jahkoy straight-arm his way back into the current R&B conversation. Across nine tracks, it appears the time away has seen him continue to grow his craft — his vocals and songwriting skills have levelled up.
"Acceptance" is set on simmer, its murky soundscape giving way to reality-induced clarity: "Girl I'm breaking these habits / I'll put you where you wanna be." A number like "Deja Vu" dips into sing-rap territory, with a '90s R&B flow. The catchy "Fefe Dobson/Soho House" offers up eyebrow-raising bars like "Rock my world like Fefe Dobson." "Leftover Lust" goes in on abundant sexual options and "Crazy Girl" induces head-nods as it messes around with a familiar yet fresh flow.
404 reveals that Jahkoy has staying power and is a big hit or two away from big success. This might just be that year.
