It's been a while since Jah Cure's "Longing For" hit the reggae airwaves — 2004 in fact — and the Jamaican artist's inimitable vocals ensured that the track has been a staple in reggae DJ sets since then.

It's now 2019 and, by the sound of Royal Soldier, his voice still holds up and he still has something to say. And he's brought a who's who in music to back him up — names like Melanie Fiona, Popcaan, Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley and Tory Lanez offer social proof. The 14-track album isn't content to rest on its reggae laurels and offers a modern sound — see tracks like "Marijuana" with Jr. Gong and "Only You" starring Mya. The Tory Lanez track, "Magic," aims to appeal to old and new listeners and while not mindblowing, it holds up. Melanie Fiona hops on a classic reggae vibe with "Work It Out" and the Popcaan and Padrino joint "Life Is Real" serves up OG and new school flavour.

Royal Soldier is a curious album in its goal to appeal to a range of reggae music lovers. There's something here for everyone, but that means some might feel a way that this is the approach taken. That said, it's solidly produced and clearly a project that shows that Jah Cure has still got it.
