Jade McNelis

Toronto ON June 7 to 9

BY Scott A. GrayPublished Jun 21, 2007

Beautifully soaring yet casual in delivery, Jade McNelis’ vocals echoed a younger Emily Haines, an obvious influence on her songwriting and performance choices. A Prophet 600 synth added buzzing electro-warmth to some of her songs that were backed up by two members of fellow Toronto indie rockers Mariposa, adding to the music tremendously with beautiful vocal harmonies, cello, guitar and bass, along with a silky smooth and creative drummer from Humber College’s jazz program. The group are obviously early in their development, having to dip into solo piano material to fill the set, but are well on their way towards greatness.
