Jacques

Romantic

BY Eric HillPublished Feb 1, 2003

Jacques is Anthony Reynolds, who was in the band Jack before he left to be Jacques. Then, he rejoined Jack, while still being Jacques. Confused? More to the point, Romantic is a five-song EP that is post-Roxy Music, Mexi-Cali Momus-styled affair. Reynolds adapts a Lorca poem in "Serenade" and this track provides the key to the rest of the disc, as a quiet lyricism and wounded heart combine to craft songs Mark Eitzel would proudly sing in some cantina south of the border. The album opener is a Calexico-tinged revision of a track by label-mates Migala. The production on other tracks includes understated electronics that slightly alter the atmosphere of the music, like spotting satellite dishes at the edge of a desert.
