Mark T. Smith (of Explosions in the Sky) and Matt Cooper (of Eluvium) have an album coming out next month as Inventions, but before Maze of Woods drops, they have recruited the Field and Leyland Kirby to remix tracks from the release.
In the Field's hands, "Peregrine" sports a hypnotic purse that shifts and morphs slightly while still retaining its ethereal swaths of synths. The nine-minute arrangement culminates in an extended comedown.
As for Kirby, he took on "Springworlds," which he presents as a heavenly drone. There are a few thumps and sparse beats, but for this most part, this is pure, drifting amorphousness. Compared to the Field, Kirby's ambient remix is a little more true to the spirit of Inventions' original.
Maze of Woods drops on March 17 via Temporary Residence.
