After dropping The Level Above Human, Ingested spent much of 2018 on the road, including a cross-Canada headline tour and further dates in the country on the "Devastation on the Nation Tour." Barely a year later, the British slammy death metal quintet are returning with the Call of the Void EP, and we've got the first taste here via opener "Mouth of the Abyss."
The band actually popped into the Exclaim! office for an interview on the aforementioned tour and said they want to be "extreme metal's greatest hits in a band," which they've accomplished on this June 14 release.
After opening with a hardcore-esque beatdown, the track chugs a bit before some frantic death metal riffing (atop blast beats, of course) that makes way for a subtle slam passage. Subtle ain't exactly a glowing endorsement for a crushing riff, but it's only used here because they bring it around later and make it as brutal as can be. A semi-melodic build up seems to be seeing the song out before they bring the opening back around.
Drummer Lyn Jefs explains the reason for the quick turnaround on new material and what new it actually brings to their sound:
Our new EP isn't just material for material's sake or a stopgap between albums, this is something we feel is an important evolution in our style and is a piece of music that will again transcend the genre of slam.
We feel immensely proud of the Call of the Void EP, it is something we have worked hard on to develop while on the road so much of 2018. It is darker, riff-heavy and atmospheric but still has all the ingredients that make Ingested what it is.
