I'm Not a Gun

We Think As Instruments

BY Matthew HiscockPublished Jun 1, 2006

Imagine an instrumental version of down-tempo rockers the Sea & Cake, where they were a product of Berlin’s minimal scene instead of Chicago’s indie scene, and you’ll get the general idea of this latest disc from two-piece I’m Not a Gun. For the most part a guitar/bass/drums album with flourishes of electronic texture here and there, it’s probably the only record reviewed on this page to prompt "they kind of sound like Coldplay” from a reviewer’s girlfriend. Which is not to say it’s sonically boring — it’s not. It’s just a shame the electronics weren’t featured more. As it is though, it’s a solid "rocktronica” record: varied and in some cases quite pretty, in a Godspeed-with-computer-noises-kind of way. Sunday afternoon music then.
