Hollow Earth

We Are Not Humanity

BY Bradley Zorgdrager Published Apr 17, 2012

Much press for Hollow Earth's debut EP, We Are Not Humanity, will undoubtedly focus on guitarist Matt Moynihan's current role as vocalist for Shai Hulud. And pressing these ties isn't without merit. From the misanthropic album title to the bittersweet melodic riffs throughout, it's clear that Moynihan's main gig has influenced his newer project. However, "On the Precipice" gallops with energy not often found in Shai Hulud, exhibiting other influences that prove that though the Earth may be hollow, it still has many layers. There should be care on how much the members' involvement in Shai Hulud (other members have filled in on tours for the band) is lauded in promo materials, because if they keep releasing music this good, future releases might say "ex-Shai Hulud" instead. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
