Hollow Earth didn't warn Houston when they went into orbit with a pair of 2016 releases — the Parting Remains EP and Dead Planet album — and 2017 is continuing that trend with a cover of Failure's "Heliotropic" debuting as the first episode of Silver Bullet Studios' "Silver Bullet Influences" series.
The band show little of their metalcore past, instead providing an answer as to where their "sci-fi-based space rock-influenced doom/sludge" sound came from. Instead, the cover is fairly faithful to the original, with guitarist/vocalist Mike Moynihan leading the vocal charge with some effect-laden crooning, though the bottom-end is a bit more booming here, with crunching dirges backed by vocalist/bassist Steve Muczynski's growling.
The accompanying video enhances impact; though a fairly standard performance clip, the contrast-heavy, blue-lit footage is visually interesting enough to keep you watching for its seven-minute runtime.
Hollow Earth will spend the next month on their namesake planet, primarily in Canada, supporting Every Time I Die and Knocked Loose. Who knows if they'll play this song live, but the possibility of seeing the look of confusion on the faces of mosh-ready fans is worth the price of admission.
