It was recorded on a four-track in a Reno hotel room

Since Hollerado announced their final shows last year, frontman Menno Versteeg has already released an album with his supergroup Anyway Gang. Now, he's revealed a new solo album under the name Mav Karlo.

In an announcement on Instagram, Versteeg explained that 2019 had been a difficult year for him personally, prompting him to decamp to Reno for nine days over the holidays. According to the songwriter, "I brought an old 4-track tape recorder and the first guitar I ever owned. The day I arrived I bought a used delay pedal and a bunch of cassettes at a pawnshop."

The album is made up of the lo-fi recordings Versteeg recorded in his hotel room in Reno. It's worth noting that the songwriter refers to it as an "album" with scare quotes.

The lead single is the very first song from the session, "Shakedown," a catchy tune that mixes folk strums with lo-fi drum machines and reverb. Check out the VHS-chic lyric video below.

The full album comes out in less than a week, on March 9, via Royal Mountain Records. That's the album cover above; the title has not yet been announced.

Mav Karlo has also launched an Instagram page full of grainy photos of Reno and a few shots of Versteeg.
