Greber

Hometown Heroin

BY Keith CarmanPublished Nov 28, 2010

There are many sides for and against the whole "less is more" axiom. Some believe that minimalism is nothing but absolute purity, where others feel it limits, preventing the ability to get one's point across entirely. Those living in the latter camp should be subjected to the fundamental brilliance of Greber's inaugural affair, Hometown Heroes, A Clockwork Orange-style. Created by long-time collaborators Steve Vargas and Marc Bourgon (the Great Sabatini and Fuck the Facts, respectively), this endless onslaught of blast beats smashing against detuned chug riffs, embittered, possessed bellowing, cacophonous and melodic interludes, with occasional audio samples is accomplished by nothing more than two minds looking to do the same thing: annihilate comprehension, deconstruct the rigid state of modern extreme music and create some of the heaviest fucking music possible in a tight 20 minutes. With the screeching assualt of "Bullfighting Accident," death metal grind of "Carriers" and dissonant feedback of the title track, this mission isn't just accomplished, it's reiterated, beaten into submission and pissed on. In the case of Hometown Heroin, less truly is more.
