This is the Wind that Blows it Out – Solos for 6 & 12 String Guitar

BY Neil HavertyPublished Jul 1, 2004

Something tells me we’ll be hearing this kind of record from a lot of well-respected independent rock guitarists in coming years. As they grow a little older and wiser, it’s only natural that these musicians would look beyond the noise and into the complex, subdued world of classical guitar playing. Glenn Jones (the guitar wizard behind post-rock veterans Cul De Sac) has assembled eight beautiful songs focused on quick finger-picking, breathy acoustic passages and bottleneck slide playing. Riding along at a level plane throughout the disc, This is the Wind is a soothing listen, perfect for bedtime floating or cottage life relaxation. In the spirit of Lenny Breau and the Takoma Records releases of the ’60s and ’70s, Jones sullenly shows off his classical chops, often giving the illusion that two or three guitars are playing at once. This definitely isn’t for everybody but if you appreciate a virtuoso when you hear one, make sure you give This is the Wind that Blows it Out the undivided attention it deserves.
