Gjallarhorn are a Swedish-speaking Finnish acoustic folk band, but don't let the dreamy nature of many of Gjallarhorn's songs fool you. This third album is intense and mystical with a foreboding darkness about it. Drawing from Swedish and Finnish folk music, Gjallarhorn wisely employ a haunting didgeridoo to their musical palate to form a unique and often breathtaking sound (the title track alone is fascinating with the didgeridoo taking the role of rhythm and bass). The droning stick aptly takes the place of the traditional Swedish bagpipe. Medieval sounds and Nordic themes pervade the album and it is no stretch to imagine Grimborg as a fitting soundtrack to the next J.R.R. Tolkien movie, The Return of the King.
