Calgary's Ghostkeeper have released their first new track since 2017. "Grassy Plains" arrives alongside a video that channels psychedelic rock and pays homage to the Indigenous experience.
The indie-rock group blend environmental imagery with Indigenous traditions to weave a story. "[It's] a fantasy based on a post-apocalyptic scenario where her man has gone off to fight environmental destruction as a revolutionary soldier. She is driven to seek the help of the menegishi, Sacred little people," the band said in a statement of the single. "She will gather medicine and words to bring her love home."
The black-and-white video plays like a fever dream, with the images shifting and morphing in kaleidoscopic fashion. Ghostkeeper's performance mingles with the narrative, melding reality and fantasy throughout. High-pitched, wavering vocals and fast-paced drums serve to further transfix viewers.
