Ghislain Poirier

Soca Sound System

BY Sergio ElmirPublished Mar 26, 2009

Relentless BPMs and top Trini MCs mark the rhythms on this anticipated release from Canada's answer to the bass generation: Ghislain Poirier. Although he might not have the profile that fellow dancehall-electro producers like Diplo have, Poirier is still able to leave a big impression on the scene with his knack for programming sweaty beats and maddening electro bass lines. Perhaps timed perfectly to coincide with Carnival season, Soca Sound System takes the familiar jump-and-wave ethos of Soca and puts a 2009 grime/dancehall twist on it. Tracks like "Immigrant Visa" and "Wha-La-La-Leng" keep the BPMs at a reasonable rate while the drop-kick bass lines blast the tracks forward. "Get Crazy" and "Karnival" burst through the speakers with cranked up BPMs and sirens blaring. Soca Sound System is the must-have album for fans of bass-heavy, futuristic dancehall rhythms and for anybody looking for the next soundtrack to some serious ass-shaking.
