It looks as if 2009 is shaping as quite the big year for Ghislain Poirier. With big-ups from the likes of DJ/rupture and South Rakkas Crew, the Montreal DJ/producer has kicked off what will be year-long arc of grimey, dub-loaded releases, the first of which hit the marketplace this week via beat peddlers Ninja Tune.
Titled Soca Sound System, the inaugural EP release of Poirier's series is out now digitally and due on twelve-inch come March. It features four new cuts and includes guest vocalists such as long-time collaborator Face-T, MC Zulu and Soca legend Mr. Slaughter. You can get a taste of the EP via the track "Get Crazy," a dance floor burner recorded early in the morning at a NYC hotel room, which can be heard streaming on Poirier's MySpace page.
Poirier's second instalment in his 2009 Ninja Tune series is slated for June/July and is dubbed Run the Riddim, with the third contribution coming with the title Low Ceiling in October. The plan is to then cap off the year with all three being released as a double-disc album titled Running High, which will feature more new material, alternate versions, remixes and a whole lot of bass-thumping dance floor beats.
In addition to all the releases, Poirier also has several live dates lined up, which find him making several Canadian stops.
